Lace and Braid Birthday Card

It’s lovely for someone to receive a beautiful handmade card – whether it’s for a special occasion or just to say “I’m thinking of you”. There are so many talented people out there making cards with stamps, cut-outs, stickers etc. so how about using fabric, lace and braid for something a little bit different. One of my best friends was celebrating her 60th birthday – I know she always appreciates anything I make for her which makes the process of creating something for her all that more worthwhile. She told me a while ago that she has kept all the Christmas cards I have made for her the past few years and puts them all out every Christmas as they are so pretty – a true friend and a kind and appreciative lady.

You can buy cards with  cut-outs already done for you in craft shops or card making supplies sites – some have acetate covering the cut-out as per the one I have here and others don’t so it is your choice. The acetate protects your fabric and lace however if you wanted to make a card with more of a 3-D effect in the middle, you really don’t want the acetate.

I had a stash of lace pieces and satin off-cuts plus some lovely lace motifs that had already been coloured with dye.  It’s a good way to be able to use up some of those smaller pieces of fabric you always seem to have hiding away in a box.

I’ve put step by step instructions on how to make this card on my Craft Found site. It really is very easy and will make a lovely surprise for that someone special.

  1. Apologies – I ‘liked’ this in a hurry this morning but didn’t have time to comment (the cat stole some curling ribbon and I had to chase him because he will eat it otherwise)! I think this is such a great idea, a different take on card and paper and so good to be made by, or given to, all those who love fabric or sewing. Super idea.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comments. I too have problems with my kitty in my craft area. More like jumping all over shelves and knocking things down and getting into any drawer I have open. Wouldn’t have it any other way though. 😻 Yes the fabrics, lace etc. definitely give a different take on the card and it really is so easy for anyone to do. The cut-out cards are a great option too.
